Blowpipe
Blowpipe, a tube through which a steady stream of air is blown. Short, tapered blowpipes of brass or glass are used by chemists and mineralogists to blow air into an alcohol or gas flame. This jet of air blows the flame against the object being heated and supplies extra oxygen required to make the flame hotter. The larger end of the blowpipe can be blown into by mouth or, for long periods, can be connected to a bellows operated by hand or foot.
Long iron blowpipes are used to make hollow glassware from solid masses of molten glass. One end of the blowpipe is dipped into molten glass and then lifted with a blob of molten glass clinging to it. Air is blown through the blowpipe from the other end.
