H. H. Arnold
Arnold, Henry Harley (1886–1950), a United States army officer who pioneered in aviation and commanded the Army Air Forces. during World War II. "Hap" Arnold was born in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1907. Arnold became an aviator in 1911, and in World War I was assistant director of military aeronautics. Arnold then served as commanding officer at various airfields. He became chief of the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1938, and headed the Army Air Forces from 1942 until his retirement in 1946. Arnold was made a general of the army in 1944 and a general of the air force in 1949. Global Mission (1949) relates his experiences in World War II.
