Frank Knox
Knox, Frank (William Franklin Knox) (1874-1944), a United States publisher, politician, and secretary of the navy. He was born in Boston, but spent most of his youth in Michigan. He was a lieutenant in the "Rough Riders" during the Spanish-American War. He was associated with Michigan and New Hampshire newspapers as editor or publisher before serving in World War I. After the war Knox was a newspaper publisher in Boston and general manager of the Hearst newspapers. He became publisher of the Chicago Daily News in 1931, and was the Republican nominee for Vice President in 1936.
Although a Republican, Knox supported President Roosevelt's foreign policy and was made secretary of the navy in 1940. The huge expansion of the navy in the early years of World War II was under his direction. Knox died in office.
