A. G. L. McNaughton
McNaughton Andrew George Latta (1887–1966), a Canadian army officer. During World War II he was the field commander of Canada's army forces overseas, 1939–43. He resigned in objection to the Allied policy of dividing his army for use in both the Italian and Normandy campaigns and retired from the army as a full general in 1944. He served as defense minister, 1944–45.
McNaughton was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. He studied engineering at McGill University, joined the army in 1910, and served in France during World War I. McNaughton was army chief of staff, 1929–35. He headed the Canadian Atomic Energy Control Board, 1946–48, and represented Canada in the United Nations Security Council, 1948–49. During 1950–62 he was chairman of the Canadian section of the International Joint Commission (a United States-Canadian commission for negotiation of boundary and water disputes).
