H. D. G. Crerar

Crerar , Henry Duncan Graham (1888–1965), a Canadian army officer. During World War II, he led the 1st Canadian Army—the largest Canadian fighting force ever assembled—in Europe, 1944–45. Crerar was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and attended the Royal Military College of Canada. He served with distinction in World War I, gaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. By 1940 he had become chief of the Canadian general staff. His successful command of the 1st Canadian Army earned him the rank of full general, to which he was promoted in November, 1944. Crerar retired from the army in 1946 and the following year was chief of a Canadian mission sent to Japan in connection with the peace settlement.
