Draja Mihailovich: Yugoslavian Army Officer & Chetnik Leader

Draja Mihailovich

Draja Mihailovich

Mihailovich Draja , or Mihajlovic, Draza (1893?–1946), a Yugoslavian army officer. When the Germans invaded Yugoslavia in World War II, Mihailovich organized a guerrilla force called the Chetniks (bandsmen). He was made war minister by the government-in-exile in 1942. The Chetniks and Tito's pro-Communist guerrillas, the Partisans, soon began fighting each other as well as the enemy. In late 1943, Allied support was shifted from the Chetniks to the Partisans who had been fighting the Germans more effectively. Mihailovich was dismissed as war minister in 1944. In 1946 he was captured and shot by Tito's forces.
