W. B. Smith

Smith, Walter Bedell (1895–1961), a United States army officer and diplomat. During World War II, Smith served as General Dwight D. Eisenhower's chief of staff, distinguishing himself as a superb military planner. He was ambassador to the Soviet Union, 1946–49; director of the Central Intelligence Agency, 1950–53; and undersecretary of state, 1953–54. He then entered private industry. Smith was born in Indianapolis. After officer training, he entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in 1917 and advanced to full general (1951). He retired from the army in 1952.
