Ungava

Ungava, a region of northern Quebec, Canada. Ungava is bounded on the north by Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay, on the east by Labrador, and on the west by Hudson Bay. It covers 351,780 square miles (911,106 km 2 ) and is sparsely settled, having a subarctic climate. The region was the site of a Norse settlement in the 12th century.

From 1670 to 1869, when it was owned by the Hudson's Bay Company, Ungava covered a much larger area than at present. It became a district of the Northwest Territories in 1895, and part of Quebec in 1912. In 1927 a portion of the original region was assigned to Labrador.
