Fort Niagara
Fort Niagara, New York, a United States Army post on the eastern shore of the Niagara River on Lake Ontario. It began as a French trading post and stockade in 1679 and was strongly fortified in 1726. In 1759 the fort was captured by British and Indian troops. The United States gained possession of Fort Niagara when the Jay Treaty was signed in 1796. The British again held the fort briefly during the War of 1812. Early buildings of the fort have been reconstructed.
