John Endecott
Endecott (or Endicott), John(1589?–1665), an English colonial governor of Massachusetts. He was one of the most influential leaders in the early years of the colony. A stern Puritan, Endecott was able and efficient but often harsh and intolerant. He was born in Devonshire. In 1628 he was one of six Puritans who bought rights for land on Massachusetts Bay. Later that year he headed a band of colonists who settled at Naumkeag (now Salem). John Winthrop arrived in 1630 and became governor of the colony. Endecott served the rest of his life as assistant governor, deputy governor, or governor.
