Julien Dubuque

Dubuque, Julien (1762–1810), a French-Canadian adventurer. He was the first white settler in Iowa, and from 1788 until his death held exclusive right from the Fox Indians to mine lead in the area of the present-day city of Dubuque. The city is named for him.
