William W. Belknap

Belknap, William Worth (1829–1890), a United States army officer and government official. He was born in Newburgh, New York. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, reaching the rank of brigadier general. Belknap became secretary of war in the cabinet of President Grant in 1869. While serving in this position he was accused of receiving bribes. In 1876 he was impeached by the House of Representatives and resigned. He was acquitted by the Senate mainly because some senators felt he could not legally be tried after his resignation.
