Braxton Bragg
Bragg, Braxton (1817–1876), a United States army officer and Confederate general. During the Civil War, he commanded the Army of the Tennessee, 1862–63. He defeated General William Rosecrans at Chickamauga in September, 1863, but in November his forces were routed at Chattanooga by Union troops under U. S. Grant and driven into Georgia. Bragg was relieved of command. He then served as a military adviser to President Jefferson Davis, a close friend.
Bragg was born in Warrenton, North Carolina. After graduating from West Point in 1837, he served in the Second Seminole War. For gallant conduct during the Mexican War, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He resigned from the army in 1856 and settled on a plantation in Louisiana. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Bragg was appointed a brigadier general, rising to full general in 1862. After the war, he was a civil engineer.
