Union Leagues

Union Leagues, or Loyal Leagues, clubs formed throughout the North during the Civil War to support the Union cause. The first clubs were formed in 1862. The Union League clubs supported Lincoln in the election of 1864. After the war, clubs were established by Republicans in the South, becoming political machines that controlled the black vote. The leagues declined after 1870, but Union League clubs survive as social organizations in some Northern cities.
