Eugenie

Eugénie (Eugénie Marie de Montijo de Guzmán) (1826–1920), empress of the French, 1853–70, and the wife of Napoleon III. She was noted for her beauty and for the brilliance she gave to the French court. She was born in Spain, the daughter of a Spanish nobleman and a woman of Scottish descent. Eugénie married Napoleon III in 1853. She advised her husband on political affairs and three times acted as regent during his absence. Eugénie supported the power of the church and opposed liberal or democratic ideas.

Eugénie took refuge in England when Napoleon was overthrown in 1870. Her only son, Eugene Louis Jean Joseph, joined the British army and was killed in the Zulu War in 1879. She traveled much in later years and kept out of politics.
