Queen Marie

Marie (1875–1938), queen consort of Romania, 1914–27, and dowager queen, 1927–38. Her full name was Marie Alexandra Victoria. She was born in England, a daughter of Albert, Duke of Edinburgh, and thus was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In 1893 Marie married Ferdinand of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, who became King Ferdinand of Romania in 1914. She helped get Romania into World War I on the side of the Allies, and served as a Red Cross nurse. Marie was also an author, writing fairy tales and novels.
