The National Geographic Society

National Geographic Society, a United States organization for the increase and spread of geographic knowledge, and the promotion of research and exploration. It has conducted or sponsored expeditions to many parts of the world. Examples are Admiral Byrd's first and second Antarctic expeditions and the successful 1963 American Mount Everest expedition. The society prepares maps, books, and globes, and publishes National Geographic and National Geographic World, both monthly, and National Geographic Traveller, six issues a year.

The National Geographic Society was founded in 1888. National membership is about 10,000,000. Headquarters are in Washington, D.C.
