Geography of Georgetown

Georgetown, Guyana, the country's capital and largest city. It is on the northern coast of South America at the mouth of the Demerara River. Georgetown, Guyana's chief port, processes and exports large amounts of sugar and rice. Other exports are bauxite, diamonds, and timber. The city was founded in 1781 by the British, who named it for George III. It is also called Demerara.
