Purus River, a tributary of the Amazon River in central South America. It begins as the Alto (upper) Purús in the Peruvian Andes and flows northeastward for about 1,800 miles (2,900 km). The Purus enters the Amazon 120 miles (193 km) upstream from Manaus, Brazil.
