Mount Erebus

Erebus, Mount, an active volcano in Antarctica. It rises to a height of 12,450 feet (3,795 m) on Ross Island in the Ross Sea. It was discovered in 1841 by Sir James Clark Ross, a Scottish explorer, who named it after one of his ships. Members of Ernest Shackleton's expedition ascended the peak in 1908.
