Wilkes Land, the coastal region of Antarctica south of Australia. Wilkes Land extends along the Indian Ocean between Queen Mary Coast and George V Coast. The South Magnetic Pole is off its coast. Wilkes Land was discovered in 1840 by Charles Wilkes, a United States naval officer. Parts of it are claimed by Australia and France; Australia, France, and Russia have scientific bases there.
