Geography of Woonsocket

Woonsocket, Rhode Island, a city in Providence County, in the northern part of the state. It is on the blackstone river near the Massachusetts border. Woonsocket is primarily an industrial city, best known for the production of textiles.

Settlement began in 1666. The first cotton mill opened in 1810, the first woolen mill in 1840. As in the rest of New England, textile manufacturing in Woonsocket has declined since the mid-20th century. Many of the city's residents are of French-Canadian descent.
