Geography of Portage la Prairie

Portage la Prairie, Canada, a city in southern Manitoba. It is around 45 miles (70 km) west of Winnipeg. The city serves as the market city for the surrounding Portage Plains farming region. It also is one of Manitoba's largest retail centers.

Settlement began in 1738, when traders built Fort La Reine there. It became a town in 1880, and achieved city status in 1907.
