Geography of Sorrento
Sorrento, Italy, a resort town in Campania region. It lies on the Sorrento peninsula overlooking the Bay of Naples, about 15 miles (24 km) south-southeast of Naples. The town is noted for its scenic beauty and as the birthplace of Torquato Tasso, a Renaissance poet. Historic buildings include the 18th-century Belvedere Palace and the Church of St. Francis, a baroque structure with 14th-century cloisters.
Sorrento has been a noted resort since the time of the Roman emperor Augustus (43 B.C.-14 A.D.). During the 19th century it was a popular place of residence for aristocrats, artists, and writers.
