The Ardennes
Ardennes, a deeply eroded, wooded plateau lying mostly in southern Belgium and adjoining parts of Luxembourg and France. It has a maximum elevation of about 2,200 feet (670 m). The chief industries are cattle raising and dairying. In ancient times Julius Caesar described the forests of Ardennes as the largest in Gaul. The area was the scene of heavy fighting in August, 1914, at the beginning of World War I. During World War II the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944, centered here around Bastogne.
