Laconia
Laconia (modern Greek:Lakonía), a region in Greece once ruled by the Spartans. Laconia is in the southeastern Peloponnesus, partly isolated from the rest of the peninsula by mountains and sea. Its capital, Sparta, was on the banks of the Evrótas River, in central Laconia. By the eighth century B.C. the Spartans had conquered all of Laconia. They were so strong that Laconia was never invaded until the fourth century B.C. Thereafter it declined quickly in importance. Modern Laconia is a prefecture of Greece. The people raise sheep and goats, and grow wheat, olives, citrus fruits, and figs.
