Istria
Istria, a peninsula in southern Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. A strip in the north, site of Trieste, is part of Italy; the rest is part of Croatia and Slovenia. Istria has coal, salt, and bauxite deposits.
Romans conquered the native Illyrians about 177 B.C. Istria was later held by various countries, and became part of Italy in 1919. Most of the peninsula was ceded to Yugoslavia in 1947 and remained under Yugoslav control until 1992, when Croatia and Slovenia became independent.
