Holstein
Holstein, a part of the state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Holstein was an ancient duchy of Germany but was ruled by the kings of Denmark. Prussia and Austria seized Holstein and Schleswig from Denmark in 1864. Two years later Prussia defeated Austria in the Seven Weeks' War, took complete control of Holstein and Schleswig, and combined them into the province of Schleswig-Holstein.
