Gulf of Lions

Lions, Gulf of, or Golfe du Lion, a wide bay of the Mediterranean Sea along the southern coast of France and off the northeastern tip of Spain. It extends from a point near Toulon to Cabo de Creus, a cape in Spain. The Rhône River empties into the bay through a delta. The shoreline is marked by a number of lagoons. Marseille, France's leading seaport, lies on the bay.
