Hekla
Hekla, an active volcano in southern Iceland, about 70 miles (110 km) east of Reykjavík, the capital. Hekla consists of a volcanic ridge with a principal crater and a row of subsidiary craters along a great fissure. Maximum height is 4,892 feet (l,491 m) above sea level. Since the first recorded eruption, in 1104, more than a dozen others have taken place. Damage from Hekla's eruptions has been primarily due to falls of ash.
