Mount Olympus

Olympus, Mount, the highest mountain in Greece, 9,570 feet (2,917 m) above sea level. It is near the Aegean Sea on the border between the regions of Thessaly and Macedonia. This mountain, its summit snow-covered and hidden in the clouds, was in ancient times believed to be the highest point on earth, the hub of the universe, and the home of the gods. There were 12 great Olympian gods, headed by Zeus, as well as lesser divinities. The myths of the Olympian gods were recounted in the writings of ancient Greek poets such as Homer and Hesiod.
