St. James's Palace
St. James's Palace, London, England, a royal palace that served as the London residence of British sovereigns, 1697–1837. It is now used only for minor ceremonies, but the British royal court is still officially called the Court of St. James's.
In the 11th century a hospital, St. James's, was built on the site. Henry VIII had the hospital rebuilt as a manor house, 1532–33, which was connected to Whitehall, the royal residence, by a walled park. When fire destroyed Whitehall in 1697, St. James's became the royal residence. It remained so until Queen Victoria moved to Buckingham Palace in 1837.
