Quirinal Hill
, one of the seven hills of ancient Rome. The Romans built temples there and the emperors Diocletian and Constantine located their famous baths on this hill. In 1574 Pope Gregory XIII began construction of a palace on the summit, a residence that is also known as the Quirinal. Until 1870, this palace was a summer home of the popes. It then became the residence of the king of Italy and the presidential residence after Italy became a republic in 1947.
