Geography of St. Gallen

St. Gallen, or Saint-Gall, Switzerland, the capital of the canton of the same name. It is 39 miles (63 km) east of Zürich. The city is noted for the manufacture of linens and lace embroideries, and for its abbey's library. Manuscripts dating back to the time of Charlemagne, as well as very early printed volumes, can be seen here. St. Gallen also has a historical display of linens, embroidery, and lacework. The Swiss Graduate School of Economics and Administration is in St. Gallen.

In the eighth century a Benedictine abbey was founded in honor of Saint Gallen (or Callus), the Irish apostle to the Swiss, who had established his monastery here in 612. The abbey became noted for its school in the Middle Ages. A Baroque cathedral, built in the 18th century, now occupies the site of the original monastery.
