Locarno, Switzerland, a city in Ticino canton and a major tourist and health resort. It lies on the southern flank of the Alps near the Italian border and overlooks Lake Maggiore, one of Europe's most scenic lakes. Locarno is noted for its picturesque setting and mild, sunny climate. Landmarks include the Church of Madonna del Sasso (1480) and the 14th-century castle of the dukes of Milan. Locarno has been inhabited since Roman times.
