Geography of Uppsala
Uppsala, Sweden, the capital of the county of Uppsala. It is on the Fyris River, about 40 miles (64 km) north of Stockholm. Uppsala is a cultural center, and is the seat of one of Europe's oldest universities (founded in 1477). In the 13th-century cathedral, seat of the archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, are the tombs of Gustavus I, Carolus Linnaeus, and Emanuel Swedenborg. The city's main economic activities include printing and the manufacture of clothing and footwear, bicycles, hardware, and porcelain.
The present city grew up near the site of Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala), which was the ancient capital of Sweden and still exists as a village.
