Szeged, Hungary, a city at the junction of the Tisza and Maros rivers, about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Budapest. Szeged is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center, serving the southern part of the Great Alföld, a rich agricultural region. Attila Jozsef University is the largest of several educational institutions in the city. Szeged dates from before the ninth century.
