Geography of Debrecen
Debrecen, Hungary, a city 120 miles (193 km) east of Budapest. Debrecen is a railway and marketing center for a large farming area. Factories here produce railway and farm machinery, precision instruments, and pharmaceuticals. Several institutions of higher learning are here, including Kossuth University. Debrecen was chartered in the 14th century. It became a stronghold of Calvinism in the 1500's. In 1848 it was the center of Hungary's unsuccessful revolt against Austria.
