Melanesia

Melanesia a name given to the Pacific islands north and east of Australia, ranging from Waigeo to Fiji. (The other two divisions of the Pacific islands are Micronesia and Polynesia.) The name Melanesia comes from the Greek for “region of islands inhabited by blacks.” The people, who belong to the Negroid race, and their language both are termed Melanesian.
