Far East
Far East, a term for an indefinite area of eastern Asia. Although it has long been used in reference to the eastern part of Asia, the term has no precise definition as to the lands it includes or excludes. In what is perhaps the most common interpretation, the Far East includes Japan, Korea, China, and, frequently, the easternmost parts of Russia. Western China is sometimes excluded.
Other definitions of the Far East include various additional sections of Asia and its adjacent islands. The broadest definition takes in the entire landmass of Asia eastward from Afghanistan, the Tien Shan range, and Lake Baykal. Also included are Sri Lanka and Indonesia, as well as the Philippines and other islands of the western Pacific Ocean.
