Geography of Tainan
Tainan, Taiwan, a city about 170 miles (274 km) southwest of Taipei, the capital. It lies near the Taiwan Strait in a rich agricultural area where rice and other tropical crops are grown. Food processing is the major industry. Tainan has many temples and shrines, including one to Koxinga, a Taiwanese national hero.
Tainan was founded in 1650 by the Dutch as Fort Providentia, a military installation. From 1662, following the expulsion of the Dutch by Koxinga, until 1885, Tainan was the capital of Taiwan. During most of that time the city was called Taiwan.
