Geography of Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, ', Taiwan, the second largest city of Nationalist China. It is on the southwest coast about 180 miles (290 km) from Taipei, the capital. Kaohsiung is the leading seaport of southern Taiwan and a manufacturing center. One of the island's two international airports, a naval base, a technological institute, and a medical college are in or near Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung was settled early in the 17th century and was opened as a Chinese treaty port in 1863. After Japan gained control of the island in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95, Kaohsiung was developed as a center for processing and exporting agricultural products. Rapid growth and industrial development occurred after 1950.
