Geography of Xiamen
Xiamen or Hsiamen, also Amoy, China, a city in Fujian province. It lies on a coastal island in the Taiwan Strait. Nearby are the Quemoy Islands, outposts of the Nationalist Chinese government on Taiwan. Xiamen is a seaport and the base for a large fishing fleet. Its few manufacturing industries produce mainly chemicals and paper. A railway causeway links the city with the mainland.
Xiamen was one of the first Chinese ports opened to foreign trade in 1842. The city was occupied by the Japanese during 1938–45. It was taken by the Communists in 1949 and largely closed to foreign trade. Since 1979, when China was reopened to foreign trade, the city has become an important port.
