Geography of Anshan

Anshan, China, a city in Liaoning province, about 360 miles (580 km) northeast of Beijing. Anshan lies in the heavily industrialized Manchuria region and is a major iron and steel center, drawing much of its coal and iron ore from mines nearby. Other products manufactured in the city include chemicals and agricultural machinery. Anshan's modern industrial development began in the early 20th century under the Japanese, who controlled Manchuria until 1945. Chinese economic reforms in the 1980's and 1990's provided for increased investment in industry and high technology in Anshan. During this period, the Anshan Steel Works was one of the most profitable businesses in China.
