Purple Finch

Purple Finch, a bird common in woodlands throughout much of North America. It is about six inches (15 cm) long. The male is raspberry-red with brown wings and a white belly. The female is brown above and white with brown streaks below. The house finch, which is common in residential areas throughout much of the same range, is a similar bird.

The purple finch is Carpodacus purpureus; the house finch, C. mexicanus. Both belong to the family Fringillidae.
