Redpoll
Redpoll, a small bird of the finch family. The common redpoll grows to nearly six inches (15 cm) in length. It is streaked with brown and gray above and is white below. It has a red cap, black chin, and two white bars on each wing. The breast, upper abdomen, and rump of the male are tinged with rose pink.
The common redpoll breeds in Alaska, Canada, the northern United States, Europe, and Asia. Its nest, consisting of plant materials lined with feathers, is built in trees, shrubs, or low plants, or on the ground. It lays three to six eggs, which are light green, spotted with reddish-brown. The common redpoll eats primarily seeds.
Redpolls form the genus Carduelis of the finch family, Fringillidae. The common redpoll is C. flammea.
