Adjutant

Adjutant, a military officer whose duty is to take care of the internal details, correspondence, reports, and records of an army unit. He receives and issues orders on behalf of the commanding officer and superintends the administration of the unit and the keeping of books and records, including personnel records. The adjutant of a unit commanded by a general is called adjutant general. The adjutant general of a division ordinarily holds the rank of lieutenant colonel.
