Warrant Officer

Warrant Officer, a military and naval rank. In the United States armed forces, a warrant officer ranks between the lowest commissioned officer and the highest noncommissioned officer. Warrant officers are specialists in administrative and technical fields. They have approximately the same status as commissioned officers, but do not have broad command duties. There are five grades of warrant officers in the Army and the Marines, four grades in the Navy.

The rank of warrant officer appeared in the U.S. Navy during the Revolutionary War and in the U.S. Army during World War I. (The U.S. Air Force does not use the rank.)
