Ground-Cherry
Ground-cherry, or Husk-tomato, an ornamental annual or perennial herb found chiefly in North America. The stems, two to four feet (60 to 120 cm) high, bear tooth-edged oval or heart-shaped leaves. The blue or whitish-yellow flowers are followed by husk-covered yellow or orange-red berries. Some ground-cherries bear edible fruits. American species include the tomatillo, strawberry tomato, and cape gooseberry. The showy Chinese lantern plant, or winter cherry, is native to southeastern Europe and Asia.
Tomatillo is Physalis ixocarpa; strawberry tomato, P. pruinosa; cape gooseberry, P. peruviana; Chinese lantern plant, P. alkekengi or P. francheti. All belong to the nightshade family, Solanaceae.
