Frangipani

Frangipani

Frangipani, a small tree native to tropical America. It is also called temple tree and red jasmine. A frangipani tree grows to a height of 25 feet (7.6 m); it has stubby branches and long leaves. It has fragrant, tubular flowers that grow to 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm) in diameter. The flowers are naturally yellowish or reddish, but many colors have been developed through hybridization.

Frangipani flowers are the source of a perfume, also called frangipani. In a number of countries, the flowers are used as offerings in Buddhist temples; in Hawaii, they are used for making leis.

Frangipani is Plumeria rubra of the family Apocynaceae.
